Lewis family papers, [ca. 1820]-1989 (bulk 1820-1918).

The Lewis family papers contain correspondence, photocopies of an account book, a newsclipping, and an enumeration of the scholastic population of the 10th District, Carter County schools. Also included are 59 black and white photographs and a VHS videocassette containing images of the Lewis homestead and a family history narrated by Richard Lewis. The materials document the personal and business activities of the Lewis family and the operation of their general store and cobbler shop between ca. 1890 and 1895. The newsclipping and videotape contain genealogical information on the Lewis family. The account book includes a list of Farmers and Laborers Union members and their dues. The school population records, for 1916-1918 and one monthly report from 1905, include the names of the school children and their parents.

Family and descendants of Stephen Lewis, born 1799, who farmed and operated a cobbler's shop in the Stoney Creek community of Carter County, Tenn., beginning ca. 1820. During the latter part of the 19th century, he and his oldest son, James F.M. Lewis, ran a general store for the Farmers and Laborers Union, a cooperative agricultural organization associated with the Farmers' Alliance movement.
